PRESS RELEASE

The Christian County Sheriff’s Office, in cooperation with the Christian County Coroner, Illinois State Police, Assumption Fire / Ems and Pana Fire / EMS, is investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred on August 3rd, 2012.

At approximately 6:48 A.M., Christian County 911 received a report of a two vehicle traffic crash approximately 3 ½ miles south-west of Assumption. The initial investigation determined that a semi truck was proceeding west bound on 800 N when it was struck by a Kemmerer Village van, occupied by two staff members and four students, who were traveling south bound on 2500 N heading towards Pana.

The occupants of the van all sustained injuries, including one fatality. Three were removed directly from the scene via helicopter to Springfield. Two of the injured were initially removed by Ambulance to Pana Hospital but were later transferred to Springfield for further medical treatment. The driver of the semi truck was not injured. The names of those involved are not being released at this time pending family notification.

The Illinois State Police, Accident Reconstruction Unit responded to reconstruct the scene and also conduct a commercial vehicle inspection.

This matter is currently still under investigation by the Christian County Sheriff’s Office and the Christian County Coroner.

 

The accident occurred at a blind intersection. The Christian County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind all motorists of the dangers of driving through rural areas, especially during this time of year when crops are present. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when approaching intersections with obstructed views and stop before proceeding through.
