PRESS RELEASE

The Christian County Sheriff’s Office would like to take this opportunity to address the alleged “bullying” incident that recently occurred involving elementary school aged children. A lot has been printed, and posted online, about this matter. Most of which has contained either misleading or incorrect information.

Christian County Sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp stated that “the Christian County Sheriff’s Office was promptly notified of the incident the evening after it occurred. We responded and initiated an immediate investigation that to date has included this department, the Illinois State Police, Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, the Taylorville Community Unit School District, and the Sangamon County Child Advocacy Center.”

“While this matter remains under investigation at the present time, I want to assure the citizens of Christian County that all investigative steps are being taken to bring this matter to its proper conclusion” said Sheriff Kettelkamp.  “All the evidence has been collected and comprehensively reviewed. In addition, we are working with the State Police in an effort to enhance certain items to further aid in the investigation.”

“We have conducted interviews of all involved, including the minor children. Because of the ages of these individuals we received assistance from the Child Advocacy Center. They provided the professionals required to conduct the Forensic Interviews, a specialized field that deals with the interviewing of minors” added Sheriff Kettelkamp. “The community needs to understand that we are aggressively investigating this matter. However, this is an investigation that needs to be conducted by law enforcement. Idle speculation or unfounded allegations by anonymous individuals does more to hurt an investigation than anything else.”

According to the Christian County Sheriff’s Office, the State of Illinois takes the matter of School Bullying very seriously. In 2006 the Illinois Compiled Statues, School Code, Section 27-23.7 was enacted. This section deals specifically with the issue of School Bullying. It is recognized that incidents of these types cause physical, psychological, and emotional harm to students and interferes with a students’ ability to learn and participate in school activities. In addition, the last effects from these incidents can manifest themselves in antisocial behavior such as vandalism, shoplifting, skipping or dropping out of school, fighting, drug and alcohol use, sexual harassment or sexual violence.

“The safety of our children will always remain of paramount concern to this department” said Sheriff  Kettelkamp. “However, to be truly effective in protecting them we must work together in partnership. This means not only law enforcement and school officials but parents and guardians as well. Each of us has an important role in communicating with our children and educating them about the side effects of bullying, not just for the victim but for those who engage in this behavior as well.”
